Outside The Lines is where people who care about how we share knowledge share knowledge.
The common threads to our work can be hard to name at times. Outside The Lines has its roots in open publishing and the expansive universe of open infrastructure, community publishing, public scholarship, scholarly communication and knowledge justice. We take a broad view of what counts as "open" and "publishing", understanding it to include many kinds of creation by and for anyone invested in improving the ways in which we document and share knowledge. It's an imperfect term (words are hard), but we hope you'll look beyond the label, and see yourself in what we create.
So, with that in mind: Outside the Lines is a publication of, for and by the open publishing community. It brings together perspectives from practitioners, librarians, scholars, technologists, students, educators and the many others who are re-imagining knowledge exchange on their own terms. Together, we explore how values-driven, knowledge-justice oriented publishing is growing, changing and impacting the world around us.
Our Values
Drawing from Radish Press, our publisher, we hold the following guiding principles closely in our editorial and management practices:
- Publishing is a creative, powerful way to contribute to our collective knowledge
- Many different ways of knowing and doing offer valuable contributions to our collective knowledge
- Everyone deserves care, joy and rest
We are also explicitly committed to upholding feminist, queer and anti-colonial ethics and practices and expect our community to hold us accountable to these as much as we do ourselves.
